Paris Olympics Part 1: Background and Timeline
- Monday 29th July 2024
For the second time in its history, Sport Climbing hits the spotlight at the Olympic Games in Paris with a packed six-day programme starting a week from today on Monday August 5th.
Unlike Tokyo 2021 Games when the sport climbing was held over a four-day periods and medals were award for the Combined event which featured Boulder, Lead and Speed, two sets of medals will be awarded to Olympians at the Paris Games; one set for the Boulder and Lead Combined and a second set for Speed Climbing. Also, all the Boulder & Lead and Speed climbing at the Paris Games are scheduled over a six day period – August 5th to the 10th.
In total 68 athletes – 40 in the Combined and 28 in Speed will contest the medals. The split between men and women is equal, 20 and 14 men and women will contest the Combined and Speed events.
Schedule
The six-day schedule will allow athletes to climb on alternative days allowing them to be better rested between the individual rounds.
The Boulder and Lead Combined will start with separate boulder and lead semi-finals in which all the Combined athletes will compete. The top ranked eight climbers will then go forward in the finals to be held on the 5th and 6th day for the men and women respectively.
The Speed event will be held over the first four days starting with qualification, seeding and elimination rounds on the 1st and 2nd days whilst the quarter finals, semi finals and then the small and big finals will be held on the 3rd and 4th day of competition.

Five climbing walls will be used during the Games: an indoor wall for warming up and four outdoor walls, with three for competition events (speed, bouldering and lead combined) and the last one set aside for competitors to warm up on.
