- Friday 16th February 2024
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard Newman. He suffered a serious heart attack and passed away earlier this week. Bernard was a well-known figure in the climbing world and had a successful career as an editor, writer, and photographer.
From 1998 until 2007, Bernard was the editor of Climber magazine. Prior to that, he held the same role at Mountain magazine. He was also the compiler of the highly sought-after book, Extreme Rock. Bernard had a passion for writing and photography and contributed to many books throughout his career.
Born in Birmingham in 1950, Bernard moved to Leeds in the 70s to study Geology at Leeds University. He became an important member of the Leeds climbing scene and was a vice-president of the Climber’s Club. He also served as the Editor of the Alpine Journal.
Our thoughts go out to Bernard's family and friends during this difficult time. We plan to pay a full tribute to Bernard in the near future.
