Today is International Women’s Day and scores of events are taking place around the world to celebrate women’s achievements.
The first National Women’s Day was held on February 28th, 1909 in the USA. A year later, during an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetin – leader of the “Women’s Office” for the Social Democratic Party in Germany - prompted the idea of an International Women’s Day which would be held on the same day every year in every country. The idea – originally to promote better pay and voting rights for women - was accepted although it took some years for it to come to fruition. In 1965 IWD was transferred to March 8th where it has remained ever since.
Berghaus have released a short film of Molly Thompson-Smith in which she calls for girls and women to take up the sport of climbing.
