Patagonia gifted 100% of their global retail and online sales from Black Friday to what they describe has “grassroots nonprofits working on the frontlines to protect our air, water and soil for future generations”.
Many of their customers have described Patagonia’s incredible altruistic effort as “fundraiser for the earth”.
In the aftermath of Black Friday, Rose Marcario, President and CEO of Patagonia, Inc. and Patagonia Works, reported back on the company blog; “We’re humbled to report the response was beyond expectations: With your help, Patagonia reached a record-breaking $10 million in sales. We expected to reach $2 million in sales—we beat that expectation five times over”.
Marcario added; “Many of these environmental groups are underfunded and under the radar, and they are overwhelmed with your commitment. On behalf of these activists and every Patagonia employee, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our customers, friends and community worldwide who showed up to #loveourplanet.”
Patagonia is a ‘proud member’ of 1% for the Planet, an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry. Members of the 1% for the Planet alliance contribute 1% of total annual sales to grassroots environmental groups, member companies affect real change. Patagonia, as we reported in our Kendal write-up here, also encourage owners to repair and broken or damaged clothes by bringing them to a country-wide road-shows where Patagonia’s skilled workers will repair not only their clothes but items manufactured by other companies in an attempt to eke out the maximum use for all items before they’re finally ‘retired’.
