Amidst considerable speculation and uncertainty amongst leading competition climbers, Shauna Coxsey - the current World Cup Boulder Champion, has declared her intention to add lead and speed to her already world-class bouldering capabilities in her bid for a medal at the Tokyo games in 2020.
Shauna – latterly a bouldering specialist – told the BBC that she’s committed to adding all three climbing disciplines to her training plan and outlook: "Having spent time to consider my options I'm now really confident that adding the two extra disciplines [lead and speed] can actually make me a better athlete."
Crucially, Coxsey will receive funding to assist her bid for Olympic Gold. Only genuine medal contenders attract funding in the UK and her status as double-World Cup Boulder Champion has undoubtedly been instrumental in securing both funding and the coaching support that the funding will bring.
