The Paris Organising Committee have proposed sport climbing as one of four additional sports for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The IFSC report, following the additional of sport climbing to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, that the Paris Organising Committee for the Paris 2024 games have also included sport climbing as one of the four additional sports. Breakdancing, Skateboarding and Surfing have also been proposed as the three other additional sports.
The proposal will now be presented to the International Organising Committee Executive Board which is scheduled for March 26th to 28th. If sport climbing is accepted, the proposal will then be put to the 134th International Organising Committee Session on June 24th in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Marco Scolaris, President of the IFSC said; “It is again a great day: our climb goes on, and new challenges are taking shape beyond Tokyo. We are happy to see that Paris 2024 is supporting the new wave, which is strengthening the Olympic movement. We are grateful for the proposal’s recognition of the value of Sport Climbing and the work the IFSC has done. We are proud to be part of this process and we look forward to the next steps in the following months.”
Unlike Tokyo 2010, the Paris 2024 Games proposal is to award additional medals recognising speed climbing as one event and bouldering and lead climbing as a separate combined event. A total of twelve medals will be awarded, six to men and six to women. Likewise, the number of competing athletes will increase from 40 at Tokyo to 72 at Paris. The Paris proposal is for 16 men and 16 women to contest the six speed climbing medals and for 20 men and 20 women to contest the six medals for the combined bouldering and lead competition.
